One mile downhill from Great Malvern and a short walk from Great Malvern Railway Station, Barnards Green is a vibrant self contained community. There is a wide range of independent shops, restaurants and other establishments including vets, a Post Office and hairdressers. One of the three large Malvern state secondary schools, The Chase School, is located here, as is the Malvern Hills Science Park and the international defence science company, QinetiQ.
Much of Great Malvern was built when wealthy Victorians were attracted by the Water Cure. Barnards Green, however, grew in size in 1942 when the government Telecommunications Research Establishment (TRE) was relocated to Malvern with two of its site entrances in Barnards Green. In the 1950s a large housing estate, Pound Bank, was built in Barnards Green which further enlarged it.
A large, pear-shaped roundabout, called The Twelve Apostles Island, characterises Barnards Green shopping area. Next to this is an art deco style memorial bus shelter to commemorate those who died in the World War II and a Portland Stone sculpture called "The Hand of Peace" by Rose Garrard. Rose is a Malvern based internationally renowned sculptor. She suggested and led the "Spring Water Arts Project" which led to the installation of another of her sculptures at the top of Great Malvern, the spring Malvhina.
The Barnards Green Traders Association are a a charity that help support the businesses in Barnards Green by helping organise local events and raising business for the area.In the past they have also shown their support for the Malvern Carnival and Hats festival by hosting activities and events during the festival.
