Park Wood contains some plants which indicate that it is an ancient woodland. These include Herb Paris and Toothwort seen below. Toothwort has no chlorophyll and grows as a parasite on the roots of trees, often hazel.
Most of the plants and flowers on the woodland floor have a brief window of light and warmth between the end of the winter and the re-growth of the tree leaves which effectively blocks much of the sunlight. During this springtime, Park Wood is a riot of colour and flowers making the most of the light and insect activity.
