Peter Mark Roget, famous for his "Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged so as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition" died at the age of 90 whilst on holiday in the Malverns in 1869. He is buried in the cemetery of St James's Church in West Malvern. Despite his fame for the compilation that still carries his name today, he was actually an esteemed scientist and philosopher, having studied Medicine at the University of Edinburgh and later being the secretary of The Royal Society. He also invented the log-log slide rule and wrote numerous academic papers on physiology, health and electricity & magnetism.
